This guide covers a new sump pump system or replacement of pump equipment. A useful quote distinguishes a straightforward replacement in an existing pit from a new pit, drainage connection, discharge route, electrical work, and backup equipment.
What changes the price
- Whether an existing pit and suitable drainage connection are already present.
- The need to cut concrete, excavate a pit, or connect a new interior drainage channel.
- Discharge routing, exterior termination, and protection from blockages or freezing.
- Electrical work, alarms, backup equipment, and access to the mechanical area.
- Restoration of the slab, finishes, or exterior surfaces disturbed by the work.
What a quote should itemize
- Pump model or performance requirements and the reason they match the drainage system.
- Pit work, lid, check valve, discharge piping, and exterior discharge location.
- Electrical scope, alarm or backup equipment, and the responsible trade where applicable.
- Testing, commissioning, maintenance instructions, and cleanup.
- Clear exclusions for drainage work, electrical upgrades, or restoration not included.
Red flags in a quote
- A replacement is priced as though it includes a new pit and drainage connection, or vice versa.
- No discharge route or check-valve details are listed.
- Electrical work is implied but not assigned to a qualified trade.
- The proposal does not explain how the system will be tested before handoff.
