It should account for the history of the wall, the direction of the crack, the presence of movement, and whether the surrounding surface shows other signs of pressure or settlement.
How the method works
For a sealing repair, the contractor typically prepares the crack surface, installs injection ports or surface ports, seals the face of the crack, and then injects a material into the void so it can travel through the crack line. The material choice depends on the goal. Flexible materials are used when the primary goal is to stop water. Rigid materials may be chosen when the crack is stable and the goal is to restore continuity along the seam.
A better contractor will also explain the limits. Injection can seal a crack, but it does not stabilize a wall that is moving. If the crack is part of broader structural distress, the sequence changes: the wall must be assessed, any movement addressed, and the waterproofing or sealing work coordinated with the structural fix rather than used as a substitute for it.
When it is the right fix, and when it is not
When it fits
Crack repair is the right fix when the crack is isolated, the wall is otherwise stable, and the moisture path is clearly through the crack itself. It is also a sensible option when the homeowner wants to stop active seepage without opening the exterior yard. The repair works best when the source is a single leak path and the surrounding structure is not in distress.
It is also appropriate when the crack has been confirmed as the likely cause after other sources were considered. That confirmation matters because a leak that happens near a crack is not always caused by the crack. Water can travel along framing, behind finishes, or from a different detail entirely before it shows up at the visible line.
When it does not
It is not the right fix for horizontal, stair-step, or widening cracks that point to movement. Those need a structural evaluation before any sealing work is attempted. It is also not the right answer when the wall is bowing, shifting, or otherwise showing signs that the foundation itself is under stress.
Crack injection is also the wrong first move when the actual source is plumbing, window drainage, or broad hydrostatic pressure across the wall. In those cases the crack may be only one symptom, not the cause. Sealing it could leave the real problem active and make the next failure harder to read.
